This is an original Batik painting which is hand-drawn on fabric with a tool called the Tjanting and painted with cold fabric dyes. This artwork took me 6 months to complete as I built up layer upon layer of details, and colours beginning from the lightest to the darkest. The frangipani tree has been a constant sight for me growing up in Singapore and living in Bali, Indonesia. It reminds me to appreciate the beauty of my mutli-cultural identity.
Shuen-Li Spirit is a contemporary Batik artist based in the Netherlands. She was raised in Singapore by her multi-racial family with influences from China, Malaysia and Indonesia. She was taught art , especially Batik, at a young age by her talented mother who was an Art teacher. After obtaining her honour's degree in visual arts education at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, she went on to teach at public secondary schools before relocating to Indonesia, where she lived for 5 years. There she continued to refine her Batik talent as a way to reconnect with her roots. In 2016, she moved to the Netherlands to live with her Dutch man. Today she is a commissioned artist and she gives Batik classes and workshops in the Netherlands to children and adults alike. Shuen-Li enjoys pleasing and inspiring her customers and students with the magic and art of Batik painting, just as it has brought her immense joy in her childhood days.
